Based upon a true story, One Hour Fantasy Girl is a coming-of-age drama. The film introduces us to the twisted yet enthralling world of a young twenty-year-old fantasy girl, Becky Lewis (Kelly-Ann Tursi), who escaped an abusive alcoholic mother at age 15 and has been on her own in Los Angeles ever since.
With no high school education and struggling for money, Becky becomes business partners with Chi Trang (Paul D. Ngyen), an aspiring musician, who convinces her to try working as a fantasy girl—both needing the money to achieve their goals. She starts her first month as a Dominatrix, and immediately gains two frequent customers; Roger (John Morgan Woodward) and Bobby (Joe Luckay) who ends up sending Becky on an unexpected roller coaster ride-of-life.
Becky finds herself in a web of deceit, betrayal and murder that forces her to give up her own happiness in exchange for providing men with one hour of heaven. Shaken and bruised but determined to move towards her goals, Becky continues her fantasy girl work in hopes of earning enough money to invest in real estate and make the “big bucks.” Her journey leads her to find an unlikely ally who, for at least a moment, gives her the break she’s never had.
Almost documentarian in style, One Hour Fantasy Girl is an extremely well done film. There are no weak points, only certain elements that are stronger than others. The script is very well developed and the acting, especially that of Kelly-Ann Tursi, is excellent. Acting kudos also go to Jon Morgan Woodward, Joe Luckay, Paul D. Ngyen and Kalena Knox.
Edgar Michael Bravo is to be commended on the directing of this, his senior project. This is a very tough piece of material and he gets the best from his actors. With limited locations and what feels like a limited budget, he crafts a theatrical quality film that sheds light on a little known underbelly of Hollywood life. The Dominatrix scene in Los Angles is very well established and yet almost no one, till now, has written a film that accurately portrays the physical and emotional toll that it takes on the women who work in it. Take a look in the back of any copy of LA Weekly if you don’t believe me. This is a heck of a narrative expose. Gritty, sexy, scary and real without a shred of nudity.
The editing is reality TV in feel but with a sophistication that cries for the big screen. The tension builds well and the plot twists and turns subtly take us on a sad and yet hopeful journey. In the same class of films such as Requiem for a Dream (2000) and Hollywoodland (2006) but without the stars, One Hour Fantasy Girl is a gem in search of a distributor-as-champion. Four Stars.
