Adrian Garcia Boglino's films have become hot property, as of lately. His latest film "Penumbra" was picked up IFC Midnght, now Synapse Films recently announced that they're acquired three of his earlier films, "Room for Toursist", "Watch'em Die", and "I Will Not Die Alone" for distribution. No timetable has been set for any of these releases.
Press Release:
Synapse Films has snared rights to three terrifying feature films by celebrated Fantastic Fest and SXSW filmmaker Adrián García Bogliano, the Argentine director of festivl favorite COLD SWEAT and the upcoming PENUMBRA, grabbed by IFC Midnight on the eve of the film's Fantastic Fest world premiere.
In ROOMS FOR TOURISTS a busload of girls fall prey to a town of terror... what connects the victims? The young filmmaker of WATCH'EM DIE takes a job that leads to horror. Four young girls stop to help a woman in the street and it leads to rape horror and death in the breath-stopping I WILL NOT DIE ALONE.
"I am a huge fan of Adrian's films and have seen every single one. I feel that he may be the most talented new filmmaker I have come across," enthuses Synapse head Jerry Chandler. "He is a master of making the most of miniscule budgets and his attention to detail is unmatched. I was hooked when I first saw ROOMS FOR TOURISTS---the atmospheric dread is palpable early on. I WILL NOT DIE ALONE is somewhat similar to I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE, only it's a great movie! And WATCH'EM DIE is much more fun to watch than Hostel or its myriad imitations."
Synapse Films exec Jerry Chandler negotiated the deal with the filmmaker.
Synapse Films has recently released brand-new remastered Blu-ray releases of James Glickenhaus' THE EXTERMINATOR, William Lustig's MANIAC COP, and Frank Henenlotter's FRANKENHOOKER, with Tarantino-producer Lawrence Bender's INTRUDER out this December.

Cohen Media Group recently released the official poster and trailer for the upcoming film "Oranges and Sunshine". The film is set to hit NY and LA on October 21st.
"Oranges and Sunshine" film stars two-time Academy Award nominee Emily Watson, as she plays real life social worker Margaret Humphreys. Hugo Weaving and David Wenham also co-star in the film.
Plot Synopsis:
Oranges and Sunshine tells the story of Margaret Humphreys, a social worker from Nottingham who uncovered one of the most significant social scandals of recent times: the deportation of thousands of children from the United Kingdom to Australia.
Almost single-handedly, against overwhelming odds and with little regard for her own well-being, Margaret reunited thousands of families, brought authorities to account and drew worldwide attention to an extraordinary miscarriage of justice. Children as young as four had been told that their parents were dead, and been sent to children's homes on the other side of the world. Many were subjected to appalling abuse. They were promised oranges and sunshine: they got hard labour and life in institutions.

'Straw Dogs' movie review by Ben Kenber
5:43 PM | james marsden, Kate Bosworth, Review, Reviews, rod lurie, straw dogs with 0 comments »There’s no way Rod Lurie’s remake of “Straw Dogs” could have improved on Peckinpah’s 1971 original. Even today, his version is powerfully unnerving as he descends his audience into the inescapable violence in all of us. All the same, Lurie’s remake turned out to be better than I expected it to be. Although not a great movie, “Straw Dogs” 2011 is compelling in that doesn’t shy away from the ugliness of violence. With his version, Lurie forces us to have a more objective look at the situations these characters get thrust into.
This one follows the 1971 version very closely. The places have been changed to protect the British innocent. The story takes place in
Those who saw the original “Straw Dogs” will remember the ambiguity of scenes like when Amy is raped and looks like she “enjoyed” it. In this version though it is made clear what constitutes rape; a woman can lead a man on but it becomes rape the moment she says “stop!” While many of the characters fall under the stereotypical denomination of hillbillies, some get more dimension than we expect them to. This is especially the case with Skarsgård’s character who commits an unforgivable act, but you wonder if his regret makes him worthy of forgiveness.
Marsden does strong work as David Sumner, but I kept wondering if he might be too cool for this role. David is the last person who (if you saw him up close) would be capable of harming a human being. Dustin Hoffman was perfectly cast in the original as he seemed like that person, and it was shocking when we saw what he was capable of. Marsden on the other hand has the build of a man who can kick ass whenever it is necessary, so he doesn’t look like the four-eyed nerd we expect him to be.
The performances here are all strong, and actors like Bosworth (giving her best performance in some time) handle the difficult aspects of their roles with professionalism and bravery. Skarsgård gets to play a more complex role than his character had in the original, and is face illustrates the inner conflicts of his character. But one actor I was especially happy to see here was James Wood who inhabits former football coach Tom Heddon with intense abandon. Whether he’s worried about his 15-year old daughter or getting drunker than he needs to at the local bar, Woods’ performance shows that he has lost none of his power that made him a great actor in the first place.
“Straw Dogs” could have been your average bland remake of a movie that didn’t require one. Lurie however manages to make the material his own. Whatever flaws it may have, it’s still a strong action film which leaves its hooks in you long after you’ve walked out of the movie theatre.

Adopting the rum-soaked life of the island, Paul soon becomes obsessed with Chenault (Amber Heard), the wildly attractive Connecticut-born fiancée of Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). Sanderson, a businessman involved in shady property development deals, is one of a growing number of American entrepreneurs who are determined to convert Puerto Rico into a capitalist paradise in service of the wealthy. Reviews From the Horror Chamber - The Basement (Disc One)
5:00 AM | Articles, Reviews From the Horror Chamber, The Basement with 0 comments »"The Basement”. Disc One - "The Basement"
"The Basement"
Running Time: 69 Mins
Director: Timothy O’ Rawe
"The Basement" is a lost super 8 film that never saw the light of day in the eighties, due to the various problems that the film suffered in post production and the way that some of the film footage looked. The film was unreleaseable, until recent technology cleaned up all the mistakes of the original negative.
The film is about four strangers, who find themselves drawn to an abandoned basement. There, they meet a mysterious person known as The Sentinel. He begins to show each of the strangers their future. Each of the strangers find out that they each commit a heinous deeds in the future and will send them into eternal damnation.
“The Basement“ is one of those films that you think your going to be in for a horrible movie, after the first segment. The first segment of the film is "Swimming Pool". I won't lie, but this one was hard to watch. Everything from the direction to the writing went completely wrong. The characters were dull, as felt like they came off of an assembly line. It was felt like the characters were introduced and they were killed off two minutes later. It was boring. I really thought, I was going to be in for one horrible film but it gets better as the movie goes on. Writter/director Timothy O' Rawe does a good in making each of the segments after the "Swimming Pool" segment entertaining. One of the things that makes the films good, he's able to make the scenes tense. It make the each of the stories interesting and it's also kept my interest considering that the acting here comes off as cheesy at time. The wrap around segment wasn't that bad, considering its more of rip-off of the original "Tales from the Crypt"film. I just wished that there was development in each of the segments. But considering the problems that this had in post-production, at least the film is entertaining enough to be considered a guilty pleasure.
The disc packs a lot of special features. The audio commentary track for "The Basement" is the first special feature on this disc. Director of Photography Michael Raso and John Fedele. The track goes into the history of the lost film, from the production of the film to the technical aspects and style which Timothy O' Rawe used for this film. It makes the track informative enough that didn't need a short documentary of the film.
After the commentary track, there is six minutes of outtakes and deleted scenes. Then, there is a six minute news segment on the film, when the production took place from the film. The segment included interviews from director Timothy Rawe and the film's Director of Photography, Michael Raso. It was very that was nice to see that on this disc, as its gave a glimpse to what happened during the film‘s shoot.
The next feature is three episode from an old cable access program called Meadowlands Showcase TV. It was an old cable access that was produced and directed by Michael Raso and John Fedele in the late eighties and early nineties. There is also a commentary track in that section for "The Halloween Takeover" episode. That track goes into the history of the show and the experiences making the show. Overall, the episode weren’t that bad surprisingly, as I enjoyed them.
Wrapping the disc is two short films from director Timothy O' Rawe, The first one "Say No to Drugs. A very gory short that fans of eighties underground horror will enjoy. The other short film is "Vengeance". This film didn't do much for me, considering it had no dialogue and was shot on what it appears to be super-8 video.
Also in this package, a VHS copy of "The Basement", which is a nice collectors item for eighties underground horror buffs.
“The Basement" Review Rating: Three Stars
Check back next week, as I'll review Disc Two of "The Basement" inside the horror chamber.

I always dread having to review a horror film involving clowns. While there are some decent-to-good ones, such as DRIVE THRU, IT, and KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE, a majority of them are pretty terrible. The last two films I've watched involving clowns, CHUCKLE'S REVENGE and ZOMBIE WOMEN OF SATAN, left bad tastes in my mouth. Hell, I hate clowns in general. Why do I bother even reviewing anything involving these spawns of Satan?
I guess when you see a title called KLOWN KAMP MASSACRE [which is being released on DVD by Troma Entertainment], you tend to be slightly intrigued...and horrified about the prospect of the film's quality. But I shouldn't complain too much. After all, I received the DVD screener free with all special features intact and without that distracting logo to stop people from putting the film on torrent sites. I also shouldn't complain about the film itself, as it actually happens to be a silly slasher film that's quite a lot of fun! Who knew? Smack me with a pie and let's review this surprisingly good clown flick!
PLOT
A clown boot camp has finally reopened after 15 years, recruiting a few clowns who want to master their pie throwing and balloon animal making. During a campfire, the clowns learn of a legend about Edwin the Clown (Jared Herholtz), who 15 years prior was unable to make his clown peers laugh when a cell phone interruption disrupted his stage act. Edwin, being frustrated as he was seen as a joke and a failure, decided to murder his classmates viciously and go into hiding. Old Man Bonzo (Mike Miller), losing his television show because of the crimes, decided to reopen the camp to bring back its good reputation [which is now at "Death Curse" status]. However, Edwin learns about this and decides that he'll make sure the camp closes down again by murdering these rookie clowns in really horrific ways...for good!
REVIEW
Color me surprised, but KLOWN KAMP MASSACRE is a hoot of a slasher film. Paying homage to more popular slasher movies, such as 1978's HALLOWEEN and the FRIDAY THE 13TH franchise, this independent low-budget horror-comedy knows exactly what it is and works very hard in making sure the audience is aware of it. And I must say, while the film isn't perfect, KLOWN KAMP MASSACRE has a lot to be proud of as its success rate is a lot higher than one would expect, myself included.
Writers/directors Philip Gunn and David Valdez present a really silly, yet fun and kind of clever screenplay that just shows their love for the slasher sub-genre. On the surface, KLOWN KAMP MASSACRE is your typical slasher movie. The killer wants revenge because he feels scorned and is traumatized by something in his past. The scene of the crime is reopened or celebrating something that reminds the killer of the past, making him want to celebrate in his own way. The characters are pretty stereotypical, or in this case, variations of expected clowns you have seen before. There is also over-the-top violence and lots of sex and T & A. It's FRIDAY THE 13TH, but with clowns. So if that's your thing, then you should enjoy the main plotline of the movie.
What makes KLOWN KAMP MASSACRE stand out, however, is how far it goes with the clown motif. This movie could have just had a clown killer murdering other clowns just like your typical slasher. But the film happens to be much more structured than that. For one, it seems the world that KLOWN KAMP MASSACRE lives in revolves around the life of clowns. Very early in the film, we see that much of what's on television is related to what clowns do. The news reporter is a clown. There are hip-hop videos starring clowns. There are television shows and cartoons - all starring clowns. Even the magazine world showcases clowns. It's as if clowns have taken over in this universe, with regular "non-clown" people being the minority. It actually creates a silly, yet unique, atmosphere to the film. These clowns don't feel like outsiders when most of everyone else in the world is a clown, as it's a family tradition. I think it was a great touch to do this and made the film a lot more watchable, in my opinion.
I also liked the variation in clown characters. While the character development isn't all that deep [then again, how many slasher films have deep characterization?], the looks and personalities of each main clown character are all distinct. Valerie is a sad clown with pink hair and a tear and frown painted on her face. She's also the deepest character, as she doesn't want to be a clown but does it to please her grandfather. She also has deep skeletons in her closet that continuity bring trauma to her life. Philbert is the rookie clown. Butzer Pie is the Juggalo-looking clown who's a bit of a troublemaker, due to being from the streets. He looks like a member of KISS with his face paint, being the bad boy of the group. Puff is the magician clown, who actually has special powers relating to magic. And Edwin is the non-funny, messed up in the head clown who enjoys murdering others. There's also a cowboy clown, a nerd clown, a mentally slow clown, and even a pervert clown who wears a trenchcoat with not much underneath as he constantly masturbates, which you can tell by the silly sound effects that comes [no pun intended] with it. We also watch them doing typical clown activities, such as using whoopie cushions, throwing pies, and spraying seltzer water at each other. Some of these clowns get more screen time than others, but a
ll of them are easy to identify and are fun to watch. I'm surprised none of them annoyed me, but I really liked watching all of them!
The homages to other slasher and horror films are also well done and a treat for fans who know these movies. Part of the opening theme sounds like a different take on the John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN theme, which quickly changes into one that sounds like the original FRIDAY THE 13TH theme. As a matter of fact, anytime Edwin is about to kill, we hear the classic "ki ki ki ma ma ma" but with a clown twist. The scene around the campfire, talking about the legend of Edwin, seems to be inspired mainly by FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2. There's a "Death Curse" character that's obviously inspired by the first two FRIDAY THE 13TH films. Edwin has a cabin nearby the camp, like Jason Voorhees. There's a car chase scene that seems to be taken from HALLOWEEN 5: THE REVENGE OF MICHAEL MYERS. There's even a FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI: JASON LIVES parody. And Butzer, doing his best Suicide from RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD impersonation, quotes, "You think this is a fuckin' costume? This is a way of life!" A lot of these moments made me laugh as I was impressed that KLOWN KAMP MASSACRE managed to still be its own film even with all these nods to the past.
As for your typical slasher film, you definitely get a lot of gory violence and very sexual situations. The death scenes manage to be quite creative and funny. One clown gets scalped and has his brain squeezed so the juice can run down. We get a hitchhiker [spoofed from the original FRIDAY THE 13TH] on the way to the camp, who is murdered by getting her face squashed into a car window. One clown gets hooked and then grounded inside a haystack machine. Another clown gets a pie to the face, followed by a knife to the face. One gets hung by the neck. Another gets acid to the face, which melts it all off. We get a few decapitations, explosions, mallet bashings, throat slicings, gunshots, and even a clown getting sawed in half. For a low budget film, I thought all the death sequences looked really fantastic and very professional looking. I was quite impressed and even "ooh" and "ahh"'d at some of them. As for the sex, we get a ton of boobs, close to frontal male nudity, and even a really funny sex scene with clown noises. Pretty funny stuff.
The direction by Philip Gunn and David Valdez is really great. I would have thought this production had a bigger budget than it actually did - the movie looks that good. The editing is solid. The composition and framing is perfect for this type of film. There's also quite a lot of style here. For example, the opening sequence, which is supposedly shot on a VHS camcorder in 1991, is being watched on said VHS tape with grain, snow, and just worn out footage to make it look authentic. The flashback with Edwin is shot in black and white, almost noir-style. Even a lot of subtle touches, such as the blood stains that resembles a clown face on a mirror, to all the well-shot homages of previous horror films, are just well planned and well structured visually. Usually having more than one director could really screw up a project, but Gunn and Valdez obviously love the genre and were able to collaborate very well together to come out with a superior product. The film is called KLOWN KAMP MASSACRE and these two men give you exactly what you're expecting visually. I dug it.
I won't get into all the actors in the film, but they were all great in t
heir roles. They were silly, over-the-top, and dedicated to each of their roles. I felt Jared Herholtz stood out as the killer Edwin, embracing the role. I also thought Isaac Kappy as Butzer Pie was very funny. And the cameo by Troma's own Lloyd Kaufman was great as well. I really liked the cast as they all worked well together to bring the script to life.
The DVD also has 2 hours of Special Features including:

Good stuff.
THINGS I'VE LEARNED WHILE BLOWING UP MY WHOOPIE CUSHION
- Edwin scalped his roommate and squeezed his brains into the roommate's colorful cereal. Ironically, the Fruit Loop is Edwin himself.
- Some creepy dude warned the clowns not to go to Camp Sparkly Lake. I agree. Those TWILIGHT idiots live there. I'll take my chances with the mentally challenged mama's boy at the other lake.
- Edwin hooked the Southern Cowboy Clown and grounded his body into a machine that took grass and grouped it into a box. I guess the cops are gonna have to find a needle-dick in a haystack!
- One of the clowns had her boobs painted as puppies. This explains why her pussy is foaming at the mouth. Ew...
- A pie exploded in one of the clown's faces, killing him. This is usually a great thing...in bed.
THE FINAL HOWL
Never judge a film by its title or cover, because KLOWN KAMP MASSACRE happens to be a lot of fun and well worth a look if you love slashers. The film looks great, the narrative is solid for the most part [not all the jokes work], the acting is pretty good, and the homages will leave horror fans with smiles on their faces. If you like your horror-comedies tongue-in-cheek, you'll get a kick out of this one. Just make sure you laugh often. You don't want a bitter clown leaving you a deadly whoopie cushion on your seat...
3.5 Howls Outta 4Welcome to the 306th Edition of my blog. This was a very busy week for me and put in three short films for the week which is really a record but really wanted to finish on time plus shorts are important as well. I have just been real busy with SWEENEY TODD and the movies I watched just did not fit my "unwritten rules". I have another busy week but I think it will be a little more normal now on here. I write this as the football game is on and in Fantasy things aren't looking too good and I may go 1-2. Looks like I'd better make some changes. For now I will get to my selections for the week.
Tootsie (1982): I start out with this Sydney Pollack film. Dustin Hoffman stars as actor Michael Dorsey who cannot find work because he is hard to work with so he poses as a woman to get a job on a soap opera to raise enough money to put on a friend's play. Jessica Lange co-stars in this film as actress Julie Nichols who Michael takes a liking to but must resist while he is posing as a woman. Teri Garr, Bill Murray, Dabney Coleman, and Charles Durning co-star. Director Pollack also plays Michael's frustrated agent. This is a pretty good look into the acting industry and the soap industry and a great ending.
Easy Life (1944): This is one of my shorts for the week which comes from the Crime Does Not Pay series. This one shows a late teen dropping out of high school to join a gang thinking the title but finds out soon that it is not a life to lead. There are many of these shorts meant to steer people away from crime and in some ways show relevance but mostly entertainment.
Ace Drummond: The Doorway of Doom (1936): This is a serial from the 30s and this is one of the thirteen chapters. Ace Drummond is a character created by Eddie Rickenbacher for the comics and brought alive here. You might have guessed that he is a pilot and is the "G-Man of the sky fighting crime." It is pretty entertaining if you can find it.
Beer Wars (2009): This is my documentary for the week which as you might guess focuses on the beer industry. This focuses on a lot of smaller beer companies trying to survive and not sell out to "the big three" which are Miller, Coors, Budweiser. This was a very biased documentary but kind of to be expected. It is a very interesting look inside the beer industry that many independent brewing companies can relate to. This is available on Instant Netflix.
The Guns of Navarone (1961): This is my war film for the week and quite the classic taking place in WWII. Gregory Peck stars as Captain Keith Mallory who is heading a British team out to destroy a German gun emplacement and proves to be a very hard job. David Niven stars as one of the team who is an expert on explosives. Anthony Quinn also co-stars in this war classic.
Nocturna Artificialia (1979): This is my third short film for the week which is silent animation. It shows a figure going through a town in a dream world where some is reality. It has some really interesting animation and music. This is available on Instant Netflix in the Phantom Museum shorts.
The Buster Keaton Story (1957): As you might guess, this is a movie about Buster Keaton which is played by Donald O'Connor. Now we might not want to call this a biopic as the facts appear to have been imagined quite a bit. In this movie, he performed on Vaudeville with his family which was not true. It also focused on his transition from silent to talkies which I do not believe he had that difficult of transition. Keaton made a lot of money on the rights which he lived off of the rest of his life. His real mentor was really Fatty Arbuckle and there is no mention of him, maybe because he was kind of blacklisted. There are some pretty good recreations of Keaton's silent routines but if you want accuracy this is not it, it's just a little entertaining. My biopic THE RISE AND FALL OF SHAUN BERKEY will be more accurate. This is available on Instant Netflix.
Imagine Me and You (2005): This is my British comedy for the week which stars Piper Perabo as a bride getting married to her new husband Heck, played by Matthew Goode. At the reception, things get complicated when forming a friendship with a lesbian named Luce, played by Lena Headey, where she begins to question her sexuality. This is not a bad film and something a group of girls might enjoy for their movie night. I always like seeing BUFFY alum Anthony Head who plays the father of the bride.
Come Next Spring (1956): I always like finding hidden gems like this on Instant Netflix. Steve Cochran stars as Matt Ballot who is returning to his estranged wife after about 12 years of heavy drinking and wanting to get his life together and connect with his kids who are now 14 and 12 years old. Ann Sheridan plays his wife Bess who reluctantly takes Matt back as a worker on the farm hoping his life has been together. This movie takes place in a small town in Arkansas during the depression. This is a great movie of a small town coming together, especially in the end. This is something that deserves far more exposure and can be seen on Instant Netflix.
Tekkonkinkreet (2006): I end this week with some Anime. This takes place in a town called Treasure Town which can be both peaceful and violent. Two street-urchin brothers named Black and White must fight off the evils forcing them to go into battle with the Yakuza. This movie has some really good animation and a must for anime fans. This is available on Crackle which is an app I have on my Roku but can be gotten on cell phones and other things.
Well, that is it for this week but I did do an Honorable Mention so keep reading after this paragraph. I put everything together at the last minute so I know the writing is not great, I'll try to do better next week. Stay tuned for next week which so far includes Jodie Foster, Don Johnson, Woody Harrelson, and many others.
HONORABLE FACEBOOK PAGE MENTION
Ashley Gray and Danny Trice: This is a great acoustic duo who perform in the East Central Indiana area. This is a new page and right now you can see some great videos of them doing JOLENE, SEVEN BRIDGES ROAD, and LIFE IN THE FAST LANE.
